Themes/Context for Learning: ‘All About Me’ ‘No Place Like Home’ Term : Autumn Term 2009 Language, Literacy and Communication Skills: Nursery: Recognising own name. Using games and creative activities to develop fine motor control. Draw and paint recognisable pictures and talk about them. Listen to a story with interest. Predict what might happen in a story. Talk to a small group about a given topic. Reception: Learn to read key words using flashcards. Begin to read simple books, learn letter sounds and names and correct formation. A new letter sound will be introduced weekly. Begin to use emergent writing confidently. Develop fine motor skills, grasp a writing implement correctly and choose a ’ writing hand’ (left/right) Write own name correctly and independently. Mathematical Development: Nursery: Join in with number songs and rhymes. Counting to at least 5. Sequencing patterns and numbers. Recognise common 2D shapes. Begin to compare lengths, weights and capacities practically. Reception: Count, order and recognise numerals to at least 10. Use addition and number bonds to 10. Recognise and sort common 3D shapes. Ordering sizes and lengths. Beginning to recognise some coins. Knowledge and Understanding of The World. Find out about ourselves. Leaning about our bodies and senses. Using our senses to explore likes and dislikes. Compare how houses have changed since ‘Grandma's day’. Discuss the home in which they live. Find out about different types of homes. Who lives in their house? Explore the local environment. Find out about animal homes. Notice and observe seasonal changes. Personal Social, Well Being and Cultural Diversity Development: Discussing our likes and dislikes, comparing ourselves to other people. Finding out about how we look different on the outside, but are the same on the inside. Begin to understand that we are ‘all the same, but different’. We are all special and unique. Begin to realise that people have different views, opinions and beliefs. Talk about special objects we have at home. Discuss the Bible as a special book. Talk about celebrations such as birthdays, christenings and weddings. Learning about celebrations and festivals such as Harvest and Bonfire Night. Learning about houses in different countries. Discussing similarities and differences. Work as part of a group. Learn to take turns and share. Looking after ourselves, using the toilet and washing hands independently. Learning about healthy eating and exercise. Change independently for P.E and dress again. (Remember to put their names in all items of clothing...even vests!) Welsh Development: Chanting numbers in Welsh. Begin to say how we feel in Welsh. Respond to question ‘Sut wyt ti?’ (how are you?) sing Welsh songs daily and discuss the weather. Creative development: Use paints, pastels, crayons and collage materials to make pictures. Use plastercine and clay to make models of ourselves. Explore vocal, body and instrumental sounds. Sing number songs and songs related to the letter of the week. Respond appropriately to a range of music through dance and drama. Welsh Development: Chanting numbers in Welsh. Begin to say how we feel in Welsh. Respond to question ‘Sut wyt ti?’ (how are you?) sing Welsh songs daily and discuss the weather. Parent’s Role Nursery: Help your child learn to put their coat on independently. Please send in a pair of wellies in a bag and a change of clothes for P.E in a bag that can stay on your child’s peg for the term. Please also provide your child with a piece of fruit daily. Reception: Help your child progress in his/her reading by sharing books and practising flashcards. Please ensure your child brings their reading book everyday. Ask your child about the letter sound of the week. If you have an object that starts with this letter at home, and you would be willing for your child to show it to the class and display it on the letter sound table throughout the week, please encourage your child to do so. Due to the number of coughs and colds the children are prone to this time of year, please provide your child with a box or packet of tissues.
