Theme : All About Me

Term : Autumn 2009

Language - Speaking and Listening:
• begin to listen to others and to stories with sustained concentration;
• talk about their personal experiences with confidence;
• ask and answer questions relevantly.
Reading:
• looking at poems and stories with a familiar setting e.g. traditional folk stories, etc;
• sharing Big Books, stories, poems and non-fiction books;
• recognise letter names and the sounds they make.
• read commonly used words.
Writing:
• writing their full name independently and forming school script letters correctly;
• write sentences independently and demonstrate some use of capital letters and full-stops;
• begin to spell commonly used words.


Parent’s Role
• Continue to support and listen to your child read books and other reading material sent from school e.g. flashcards (beginning to learn how to spell these), letter/sound cards and school books. Share other books e.g. fiction, non-fiction (information books) and poetry. Send reading material to school in a water-proof bag everyday.
• Continue to support your child with handwriting and writing at  home e.g. school script handwriting (lower case when writing their name), writing personal accounts, diaries, lists, sentences to match pictures drawn, story writing etc.
• Continue to support your child at home with numeracy exer-cises e.g. counting, number games, number rhymes, sorting, simple addition and subtraction (within 10) etc.

Mathematics
• Counting within 20
• Addition and subtraction within 10
• Measuring length using non-standard units
• Identifying 2D and 3D shapes and talking about their properties
• Making patterns with colours and shapes
• Sorting
• Number bonds to 10
• Time—o’clock & half past the hour
• Handling Data

Science Topics
• Investigating humans and making comparisons with other living creatures
• Investigating living and non-living things
• Investigating the senses
• Looking at differences and similarities between themselves and others

Knowledge & Understanding of the World
Using graphics programs to paint and draw;
Develop good mouse control;
Investigating the changes over the past 50 years in the area around the school;

Design and make a woven place mat;
Investigating the school and its grounds and the looking at the local area.

Bilingual Development
Welsh greetings, numbers, shapes, colours and parts of the body.
Design a jumper for Gari and describe the patterns.

Creative Development
Looking at portrait artists, Picasso, Warhol, Gwen John, Kevin Sinnot.
Investigating mixing colours and drawing self-portrait. Design ‘My Dream House’, draw onto ceramic tiles for outdoor display. Print architectural shapes;
Sing and maintain a steady beat; Recognise simple rhythm patterns; Play instruments appropriately; Create a simple accompaniment for a song.

Physical Development
Gymnastics—turning, spinning & twisting; Games—sending, receiving & travelling.

General Guidance
Please could you ensure the following:-
• that your child has access to some tissues if they are suffering from a cold.;
• that your child has an appropriate change of clothes e.g. for P.E. - shorts, T-shirt, trainers or daps (please make sure footwear is the correct size); for Outdoor Learning - Wellington boots. Please ensure that all items of clothing are clearly labelled with your child’s full name.
• that your child has a coat in school, even if the weather may look fine for the day;
• that if your child is absent for any reason, a phone call is made to school explaining the reason for absence;
• that your child arrives on time for the start of the day.
